I used to be a bank teller, and in fact I was once responsible for our branch's ATM. This story is a bit alarming.

Our ATM worked much differently. Nearly all maintenence was done in a locked room behind the ATM. We had a special ATM card that turned the ATM off and printed out a report, and then we would go into the locked room to make sure there was enough receipt tape, envelopes, etc. Telling the ATM what kind of money was in the box could only be done through a special computer in that locked room, not by anybody knowing the password.
