Seth Godin is a well-known marketing writer/consultant, who has his own blog. Over the weekend, he wrote about some of the faulty thinking that drives our nation's economy.

I don't know if he was simply saying "wow, we marketing schmucks have done a good job, people are willing to sign contracts for new cars for no reason other than they paid off their last contract," or if he was asking "how can people think about money this way?" Either way, his attitude is lighthearted.
